general questions

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?

No referral is needed to book an appointment. However, if you would like to claim a Medicare rebate, you will need a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, which includes a referral. We recommend speaking to your GP before your first appointment if you wish to use Medicare.

Medicare & Services

How do I get a Medicare rebate for psychology?

To access a Medicare rebate you need to visit your GP and ask for a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). Your GP will assess your needs and provide a referral to a psychologist. Medicare currently funds up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year.

What conditions do you treat?

We treat a wide range of mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, ADHD, chronic pain, grief, relationship difficulties, and adjustment disorders. We also support clients with workplace injuries through Workers Compensation and CTP.

How long is a psychology session?

A standard session is 50 minutes. Initial assessment appointments may be slightly longer to allow time to understand your history and goals.

How much does a session cost?

Our fees vary depending on the type of service and funding. Please contact us directly to discuss your situation and we will be happy to explain the costs involved.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a counsellor?

Psychologists are university-trained and registered with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency), which means they can provide Medicare-rebated services under a Mental Health Care Plan. Counsellors are not AHPRA-registered and cannot provide Medicare rebates.

Is Sue Stern Psychology a registered NDIS provider?
