Neurofeedback Therapy

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback (also known as EEG biofeedback or neurotherapy) is a non-invasive, drug-free brain training technique that helps your brain learn to regulate itself more effectively. By monitoring your brainwave activity in real time and providing instant feedback, neurofeedback teaches your brain to shift into healthier, more balanced patterns of activity.

Think of it like physical exercise — but for your brain. Just as regular exercise strengthens your body, neurofeedback strengthens your brain’s ability to self-regulate, improving focus, mood, sleep, and emotional wellbeing.

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

During a neurofeedback session, small sensors are placed on your scalp to measure your brainwave activity via an EEG (electroencephalograph). This information is fed into a computer which displays your brainwaves in real time.

When your brain produces the desired brainwave patterns, you receive a positive signal — usually in the form of an animation or music that plays on a screen in front of you. Over time, through this process of reward-based learning, your brain learns to produce these healthier patterns more consistently and automatically.

A session lasts up to one hour. A trained neurotherapist is present throughout, guiding the process and making adjustments to ensure the best outcome for you. Results are typically experienced gradually across a course of sessions, with many clients noticing improvements in focus, sleep, and emotional regulation within the first few weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many neurofeedback sessions will I need?

Most clients benefit from a course of 20–40 sessions, though improvements are often noticed much earlier. Your psychologist will discuss a recommended plan after your initial assessment.

Is neurofeedback safe?

Yes. Neurofeedback is non-invasive and drug-free. The sensors simply read your brainwave activity — no electricity is passed into the brain. It is safe for both children and adults.

Is neurofeedback covered by Medicare?

Yes. With a GP Mental Health Care Plan, Medicare rebates apply to neurofeedback sessions delivered by a registered psychologist.

Is neurofeedback suitable for children?

Yes. Neurofeedback is particularly effective for children with ADHD, anxiety, and emotional regulation difficulties. Sessions are adapted to suit the age and needs of each child.
